Rede Minas is a Brazilian public television network operating in the cultural, educational, and generalist format. The primary language of broadcasting is Portuguese. The network was created on August 14, 1984, by a decree signed by the then-governor of Minas Gerais, Tancredo Neves, who established the Fundação TV Minas Cultural e Educativa . It officially began broadcasting on December 8, 1984, from Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, initially on VHF channel 9 . Rede Minas is owned by the Empresa Mineira de Comunicação (EMC), a state government body, which also operates Rádio Inconfidência and the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra . The network is the third-largest public network in Brazil and is headquartered at the Estação da Cultura Presidente Itamar Franco in the Barro Preto neighborhood of Belo Horizonte .
On air, Rede Minas features a mix of its own original productions, including news, sports, cultural programs, documentaries, and entertainment, while also relaying programming from the national public broadcasters TV Brasil and TV Cultura . The flagship news program is Jornal Minas, the network's primary newscast covering local, state, and national events. The channel also produces Agenda, a long-running cultural program focusing on arts, music, and literature, and has produced special editions profiling notable figures such as architect Gustavo Penna . The network provides extensive political coverage, including debates with candidates for the Belo Horizonte mayoral election, moderated by journalist Aline Scarponi .
Sports programming is a significant part of the network's schedule. Rede Minas broadcasts matches from the Brazilian Superliga de Vôlei (Volleyball Super League) in both the female and male categories, featuring teams such as Gerdau Minas and Batavo Mackenzie . The network also broadcasts major cultural events, including the "Virada da Liberdade" New Year's Eve celebration from the Praça da Liberdade, one of Belo Horizonte's main postcards . Other notable programs include coverage of the Belo Horizonte Carnival parade of samba schools, Viva Liberdade highlighting attractions of the Circuito Liberdade, and special reports on social issues such as the homeless population in Brazil .
The network has invested significantly in technology and expansion. In 1998, it inaugurated its satellite transmission system, and in 2016 it became a pioneer among Brazilian public TV networks by launching an interactivity project on over-the-air digital TV using the Ginga middleware . In 2025, Rede Minas modernized its playout infrastructure with a complete software-defined architecture from Pebble, allowing it to expand its output by adding three educational channels and providing tailored services for terrestrial, satellite, and streaming distribution . The network is managed by the Empresa Mineira de Comunicação, with Gustavo Mendicino serving as president .
Rede Minas has expanded its coverage significantly in recent years. Until 2021, only 82 cities had access to the broadcaster . In 2022, the network entered the federal government's Digitaliza Brasil program and launched Digitaliza Minas, expanding coverage to 120 municipalities . By 2023, coverage reached 548 cities, and by January 2025, Rede Minas reached 603 municipalities in Minas Gerais, covering approximately 70 percent of the state's territory and nearly 15 million people . The network's goal is to reach 17 million viewers . Rede Minas maintains 44 affiliated stations throughout the interior of Minas Gerais and has a partnership with ADTV - Minas Gerais Radio Development Association, an OSCIP, to produce content and manage resources .
Rede Minas is available throughout the state of Minas Gerais via digital terrestrial television on various frequencies depending on the city, including channel 6.1 in Ubá and channel 9.1 in Belo Horizonte . The network is also available via satellite and online streaming platforms. Viewers can watch online the live broadcast of Rede Minas through the official network website at redeminas.tv and via the streaming platform Minasplay, available for mobile devices on Google Play and the App Store . The mission of the channel is to provide high-quality public television that promotes the culture, history, and identity of Minas Gerais, while also informing and entertaining the population with content that is relevant, educational, and culturally significant.
