The channel was founded on March 16, 1994 under the name TV Augsburg and was later rebranded to a.tv | fernsehen für augsburg und schwaben. The channel is based in the Medienzentrum Augsburg at Curt-Frenzel-Straße 4, in Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. The channel is owned by a consortium consisting of the rt1.media group GmbH with 50.1 percent, the Mediengruppe Sankt Ulrich Verlag with 37.3 percent, and the Studio Gong GmbH & Co. Studiobetriebs KG with 12.6 percent. The managing directors are Bernhard Hock and Johann Buchart. The channel is part of the Mediengruppe Pressedruck, which also publishes the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper. In March 2024, Augsburg TV celebrated its 30th anniversary of broadcasting.
