The primary language of broadcasting is German. The channel is based in Dresden, the capital city of the federal state of Saxony, Germany . The channel launched on June 10, 1996, as an independent program, following a history of regional broadcasts that began on September 26, 1994, when a regional window called Drehscheibe Dresden aired on the Dresden frequency of RTL and later VOX . The channel is owned by Fernsehen in Dresden GmbH, with Frank Haring serving as the managing director .



On air, Dresden Fernsehen features a mix of local news bulletins, talk shows, cultural magazines, and lifestyle programs. The flagship program is Drehscheibe Dresden, a 20 to 30-minute regional magazine that provides daily current news from Dresden and the surrounding area . This program is the successor to the original regional broadcast that preceded the channel's full launch. Another key program is Drehscheibe Extra, a 20 to 30-minute advertising program in which companies and products from the region are presented .
