BR Fernsehen Nord online television
BR Fernsehen Nord is a German regional television channel operating in the generalist and public broadcasting format. The primary language of broadcasting is German. BR Fernsehen Nord is one of the two regional variants of BR Fernsehen, the television service of Bayerischer Rundfunk, the public broadcaster for the state of Bavaria. The channel is based in Munich, with its headquarters located at Rundfunkplatz 1. BR Fernsehen was founded on September 22, 1964, under the name Studienprogramm, making it the oldest regional television channel in Germany. The channel was later renamed BR 3, then Bayerisches Fernsehen, and finally adopted its current name BR Fernsehen on April 11, 2016. The channel is one of the nine regional third programmes that make up the ARD network.
On air, BR Fernsehen Nord features a mix of local news bulletins, regional magazines, cultural programming, documentaries, talk shows, sports broadcasts, educational content, and entertainment series. Flagship programs include Frankenschau aktuell, the regional news magazine for the Franconia region, which airs Monday through Friday at 5:30 pm. This program covers current events, politics, culture, and human-interest stories from the northern Bavarian districts of Upper Franconia, Middle Franconia, and Lower Franconia. On Sundays at 5:45 pm, the channel broadcasts Frankenschau, a longer magazine that explores topics from Franconia in greater depth, including historical features, cultural reports, and profiles of notable Franconians. The channel also airs Rundschau, the main newscast for all of Bavaria, at 6:30 pm, and the national Tagesschau from ARD at 8:00 pm.
Beyond news and current affairs, BR Fernsehen Nord produces a wide variety of programming that reflects Bavarian and Franconian culture. The channel airs Dahoam is Dahoam, a popular daily soap opera set in the fictional village of Lansing, which is broadcast in Bavarian dialect. Other regular programs include Abendschau, a nightly magazine covering events from across Bavaria, Wir in Bayern, a lifestyle and magazine program, and Landfrauenküche, a cooking show featuring recipes from Bavarian farmwives. The channel also broadcasts religious programming, including Catholic and Protestant services on Sundays and holidays. Fitness programming is represented by Tele-Gym, a long-running exercise show. The channel also features Space Night, a cult program combining electronic music with footage of Earth and space, which has become a signature program of Bavarian television.
BR Fernsehen Nord serves the northern part of Bavaria, specifically the three Franconian administrative districts of Upper Franconia, Middle Franconia, and Lower Franconia. The southern variant, BR Fernsehen Süd, serves the regions of Old Bavaria and Swabia. The two regional splits occur during specific time slots, primarily on weekday evenings at 5:30 pm and on Sunday evenings at 5:45 pm. During these times, viewers in Franconia receive Frankenschau aktuell and Frankenschau, while viewers in southern Bavaria receive Abendschau and Schwaben & Altbayern. The rest of the broadcast day is identical for both variants, featuring the same programs across all of Bavaria. This regional splitting allows the channel to address the distinct cultural identities of Franconia and southern Bavaria, including differences in dialect, traditions, and local news priorities.
BR Fernsehen Nord is available throughout Franconia and all of Bavaria via digital terrestrial television, cable networks, satellite, and IPTV platforms. The channel broadcasts in high definition as BR Nord HD. Satellite viewers on Astra 19.2 degrees east can select between BR Nord and BR Süd directly from their receiver's program list. Cable viewers typically receive the regional variant appropriate to their location, though in some networks both variants may be available. Viewers can watch online the live broadcast of BR Fernsehen Nord through the official BR website and the BR Mediathek mobile application. Online television of BR Fernsehen Nord also includes a 24-hour live stream, on-demand access to programs for up to seven days after broadcast, and an extensive archive of regional news segments and cultural programs.
BR Fernsehen Nord strives to serve the people of Franconia by providing news, information, and entertainment that reflects their unique regional identity while also connecting them to the broader Bavarian and German context. The mission of the channel is to inform citizens about events affecting their daily lives, to preserve and promote Franconian culture and traditions, and to offer high-quality public service broadcasting that is independent of commercial interests. The channel is funded through the German broadcast license fee, which ensures its editorial independence and allows it to focus on programming that serves the public good rather than advertising revenue. Thanks to modern digital platforms, BR Fernsehen Nord provides the opportunity to watch online the live broadcast on any device - from smartphones to Smart TVs - ensuring that residents of Franconia and former Franconians living elsewhere in Germany or abroad can stay connected to their home region wherever they are.
