TV Alternativa is a Brazilian television station based in São Luís, the capital of the state of Maranhão. The primary language of broadcasting is Portuguese. The station was founded in June 2007 under the name TV WCS and is owned by Wagner Silva through Sistema WCS de Comunicação. The concession for the station is in Paço do Lumiar, a municipality on the island of São Luís, making it the first TV station not installed directly in the capital city. The station's slogan is "A nova cara da ilha" .
On air, TV Alternativa originally began broadcasting with an analog signal on UHF channel 34 in 2007. In 2012, the station moved to analog channel 35 before ceasing analog transmissions entirely on March 19, 2018, when it switched to digital terrestrial television. The station broadcasts on digital UHF channel 19 (virtual channel 19.1) in 1080i full HD resolution. Since 2007, the station has been affiliated with TV Gazeta. However, as of 2024, TV Alternativa is now an affiliate of Rede Meio, a Brazilian television network focused on the northeast region of the country .
Programs historically produced by the station include the independent program "Shopping Tudo," which aired Monday through Saturday. The station is also known for its long-term struggle to secure a public broadcasting concession against opposition from larger, established media groups. TV Alternativa covers the Greater São Luís area, including the capital and neighboring municipalities within an 80 km radius .
TV Alternativa is available in São Luís and the surrounding region via digital terrestrial television on channel 19.1. The station’s official website is tvalternativa.tv.br and it plans to expand its signal and coverage area through digital broadcasting technology .
TV Alternativa strives to be a vehicle for popular communication, producing content of interest to the community and providing a platform for voices outside of the traditional media establishment. The mission of the channel is to secure a place for independent, popular broadcasting within Brazil's national communication system, serving the people of Maranhão with local and regional content.
