NewsNet online television

NewsNet was an American free-to-air news television network that broadcast a rolling 24-hour newswheel format. The network was headquartered in Cadillac, Michigan, with secondary studio facilities in Farmington Hills, Michigan. It was owned by Bridge News, LLC, a subsidiary of Bridge Media Networks, which itself was owned by Manoj Bhargava. NewsNet was founded in 2018 by Eric Wotila and officially launched on January 1, 2019. As a dedicated source for online television, the network ceased operations on August 2, 2024.

The programming schedule allowed viewers to watch live channel coverage of a tightly-formatted 30-minute newswheel 24 hours a day, covering national news, sports, entertainment, weather, and business. The format included a nearly 12-minute rundown of the latest news headlines in the A block, a national weather forecast summary at 12 and 42 minutes past the hour branded as Weather Report, sports highlights and scores at 17 and 47 minutes past the hour utilizing talent from its sister network Sports News Highlights, and topical news segments focusing on health, business, and entertainment at 24 and 54 minutes past the hour. The network also aired a 90-minute block of educational children's programming on Saturday and Sunday mornings at 10:30 AM ET to comply with the Children's Television Act. The network was structured to provide a straight-to-the-facts, no-nonsense commentary-free coverage, eschewing politically focused panel discussion programs.

For audiences seeking a reliable live stream, NewsNet was widely available as a free-to-air service via digital terrestrial television on the digital subchannels of affiliated stations across the United States. As of April 2023, the network had affiliation agreements with 59 television stations in 49 television markets covering 24 states. The majority of NewsNet affiliates were low-power stations. The channel was accessible as tv online via its website and through streaming platforms. The network also distributed its programming through a livestream on its website, ensuring that its news programming reached viewers across the United States and worldwide before its closure.

The lunchtime bulletin gave me a helpful overview of national headlines, business news, and the afternoon forecast without dragging out any one story.

The election coverage is refreshingly restrained, but the analysis could use more context than a few clipped quotes. The business updates are solid, especially when they explain what the numbers mean for ordinary viewers.

Caught the evening bulletin for a quick update on state politics and weather. The short segments made it easy to follow without committing to a full hour.

The after-midnight newswheel is a decent alternative to noisy panel shows. The signal has dropped a few times late at night, but it usually comes back quickly.

I know this is a news channel, but a weekend block of classic films or old movie reruns would be a fun change of pace between the headlines.
