Chemnitz Fernsehen, officially known as SACHSEN FERNSEHEN Chemnitz, is a German private regional television channel operating in the news and entertainment format. The primary language of broadcasting is German. The channel is based in the city of Chemnitz, located in the federal state of Saxony, Germany. The channel's history began on October 4, 1993 with a half-hour program called Lokal TV Chemnitz, which was later renamed Drehscheibe Chemnitz and aired as a regional window on VOX and RTL frequencies. On July 1, 1999, full broadcasting of Chemnitz Fernsehen began as part of the joint Sachsen Fernsehen project, operated together with Dresden Fernsehen and Leipzig Fernsehen. Today, the channel is owned by Sachsen Fernsehen GmbH & Co. Fernseh-Betriebs KG, and the managing director is Frank Müller.
On air, Chemnitz Fernsehen features a mix of news and entertainment programs. The flagship program is Drehscheibe Chemnitz, a daily news magazine that covers current events, politics, culture, crime, and social issues from Chemnitz and the surrounding districts. The channel also produces Drehscheibe Extra, a regional advertising program, as well as a weekly magazine called 7 Tage Sachsen, which summarizes the week's events. Additionally, the schedule includes health programs such as Apotheken-TV, as well as music and cultural programs. In the past, the channel also aired game shows and feature films from the Kirch-Gruppe archives.
Chemnitz Fernsehen is part of the SACHSENeins broadcasting association, which also includes other Saxon local television channels such as SACHSEN FERNSEHEN Dresden, SACHSEN FERNSEHEN Leipzig, and several smaller regional stations. Through this unified channel, Chemnitz Fernsehen's programs are broadcast daily from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm in half-hour windows, while the rest of the time features a common Saxon program. This cooperation allows the regional channels to distribute their signal via the Astra satellite at 19.2 degrees east, making them accessible to viewers throughout Saxony and beyond.
In addition to satellite and cable broadcasting, Chemnitz Fernsehen is available via digital terrestrial television in the Chemnitz region and via analog terrestrial broadcast on UHF channel 47. Viewers can watch online the live broadcast of Chemnitz Fernsehen through the official Sachsen Fernsehen website and the SACHSEN FERNSEHEN TV mobile application. Online television of the channel is also available on streaming platforms such as Zattoo, Joyn, and Magenta TV. The channel also offers a media library on its website where viewers can watch recordings of recent episodes of Drehscheibe Chemnitz and other programs.
Chemnitz Fernsehen strives to be the primary source of local information for the residents of Chemnitz and the surrounding region, providing news that happens right on their doorsteps and reflecting the social life of the region. The mission of the channel is to complement national and state-wide programs with up-to-date reports about events from the viewers' immediate lives, as well as to promote local culture and traditions. The channel positions itself as an identity-forming medium for the region and offers a platform for local advertisers and sponsors. Thanks to modern digital platforms, Chemnitz Fernsehen provides the opportunity to watch online the live broadcast on any device - from smartphones to Smart TVs - ensuring that residents of Chemnitz, as well as former residents living elsewhere in Germany or abroad, can stay connected to their home city wherever they are.
