ABC 23 Bakersfield CA online television

23ABC News, operating as KERO-TV, is an American television channel serving as the ABC affiliate for Bakersfield and Kern County, California . The station broadcasts on virtual channel 23 and is owned by the E. W. Scripps Company . KERO-TV first went on the air on September 26, 1953, originally on channel 10 as an NBC affiliate, before moving to channel 23 in 1963 and switching to ABC in 1996 . The station’s studios are located on 21st Street in downtown Bakersfield, while its transmitter is situated atop Breckenridge Mountain .

On air, 23ABC News features a strong lineup of local news broadcasts covering breaking news, weather, and sports for Kern County and surrounding areas . The news team operates under the slogan "We Cover Kern County" and includes notable anchors such as Mike Hart (weekday news anchor at 5 p.m. and 11 p.m.), Todd Karli (Anchor/News Director), Jackie Parks (Anchor), Emily Moore (Morning Anchor), and Felix Lima (South County Reporter) . The station also has a dedicated weather team, including Lloyd Young (ABC23 Weather) and Melissa Vreeman (Morning Weather Anchor) .

The station’s history is deeply intertwined with Kern County’s media heritage. Legendary broadcaster Burleigh Smith, known as the "father of television news in Bakersfield," anchored at KERO during his 37-year career and became a trusted household name . The station was also home to iconic local variety shows such as "Cousin Herb’s Trading Post" in the 1950s, which helped popularize the "Bakersfield Sound" with artists like Buck Owens and Tommy Collins, as well as "The Uncle Woody Show" in the 1960s and 1970s . Radio and TV personality Casey Kasem also used KERO’s studios to tape his weekly musical TV variety show "SheBang" in the mid-to-late 1960s . In 1976, KERO became the first local television station to broadcast in color .

KERO-TV has had a unique affiliation history, having been affiliated with all three of the traditional "Big Three" television networks (NBC, CBS, and ABC) at different points in its history . The station was an NBC affiliate from 1953 until 1984, when it switched to CBS. On March 1, 1996, as part of a corporate affiliation deal between McGraw-Hill (the then-owner) and ABC, KERO picked up the ABC affiliation from cross-town rival KBAK-TV .

23ABC News is available throughout the Bakersfield area via digital terrestrial television on channel 23, as well as on cable networks and satellite providers. I leave 23ABC on quietly while sorting emails. The local updates add a bit of background interest without pulling me away from work.

We put 23ABC on during breakfast, and the kids usually stick around for the weather graphics and school updates. It has become an easy bit of family viewing before everyone heads out.

Streaming on my laptop is mostly smooth, with clear sound and sharp HD, though the picture softened briefly during one evening broadcast.

The weekend movie slots are a nice bonus, especially when they bring back classic films I remember watching with my family.

I often catch the late-night bulletin when the house is quiet. The stream has dropped once or twice after midnight, but the local updates are still worth checking.

The channel list is easy to browse and the free stream starts without an account. The EPG took a moment to load on my phone, but otherwise it was hassle-free.

Caught the morning bulletin for a quick traffic check before work. The weather segment was useful, although the commercial break came just as the forecast got interesting.

I usually check in for the evening forecast, especially when the valley weather looks unpredictable.
