KCCI NewsChannel 8 is an American television channel operating in the news and information format, serving as the CBS affiliate for the Des Moines, Iowa television market . The primary language of broadcasting is English. The station broadcasts on virtual channel 8 and is owned by Hearst Television, a subsidiary of Hearst Communications . KCCI was founded on July 31, 1955, under the call sign KRNT-TV, named after the Des Moines Register and Tribune newspapers' nickname, "the R 'n T" . The station adopted its current call sign, KCCI, in 1974, which stands for Cowles Communications Incorporated, the founding owners . KCCI's studios are located on Ninth Street in downtown Des Moines, and its transmitter is located in Alleman, Iowa .



On air, KCCI features a strong lineup of local news broadcasts under the branding KCCI 8 News, including morning, midday, afternoon, evening, and late-night newscasts. The station has been the highest-rated station in Des Moines for most of its history, often garnering more viewers than its competitors combined, and is known as "Iowa's News Leader" . The station presently broadcasts 29.5 hours of locally produced newscasts each week, with 4.5 hours each weekday, three hours on Saturdays, and four hours on Sundays . KCCI added an hourlong newscast at 4:00 p.m. on July 15, 2024, anchored by Stacey Horst and Ben Kaplan, with meteorologist Anne Campolongo providing forecasts .



The news team includes Jodi Long, who anchors KCCI 8 News at noon and 5:00 p.m. weekdays, having joined the station in October 2023 . Todd Magel is an Emmy award-winning weekend anchor and reporter who joined the KCCI team in 1982 and has won numerous awards from the Iowa Broadcast News Association for coverage of breaking news, political coverage, and agricultural reporting, as well as Emmy awards for coverage of a school bus explosion in Pleasant Hill and for best weekend newscast . The station's news team also includes reporter Alyssa Gomez, who previously worked at KCCI as an anchor and reporter before moving to a sister station . The station's interactive radar and weather app provide viewers with real-time weather information . On April 20, 2009, KCCI became the first station in Des Moines to broadcast local news in 16:9 widescreen, and on April 26, 2011, it became the last major station in Des Moines to upgrade its local newscasts to high definition .
