WCCO-TV signed on the air on July 1, 1949, as WTCN-TV, becoming Minnesota's second television station. It adopted its current call sign in 1952, derived from its former sister station WCCO (AM) . The station has a unique distinction in the Twin Cities market as the only major commercial station never to have changed its primary network affiliation, having been a primary CBS affiliate since its sign-on .
