C31 Melbourne online television
C31 Melbourne is the community television station of Melbourne, Australia, run by the Melbourne Community Television Consortium. It began broadcasting on 6 October 1994 on UHF channel 31, the frequency that gave the station its name, and later moved to the digital channel 44 position on the Freeview grid. Funded through sponsorship, grants, airtime sales and member donations rather than regular government money, the station built its identity on locally made programming and on giving a voice to the communities that mainstream television overlooks.
The grid mixes talk shows, music, multicultural programs and sport. Over the years it has carried Under Melbourne Tonight, The Loft Live — where Rove McManus got his start — the long-running drum clinic Melbourne Musos, the motor program In Pit Lane, the disability talk show No Limits, the SYN-produced youth blocks 1700 and Get Cereal TV, and multicultural staples like Pinoy TV, Fusion Latina and Russian Kaleidoscope. The station's most beloved oddity was FishCam, a camera pointed at the studio fish tank set to independent music, which made C31 known as the fish station. Its alumni include Hamish Blake and Andy Lee, Peter Helliar, Merrick Watts and Tim Ross, Corinne Grant and Tommy Little.
