Telenovelas have historically been a cornerstone of Venevisión's programming. The network produced its first telenovela, La cruz del diablo, in 1961, and its first international export was Esmeralda, written by Delia Fiallo, which aired in the early 1970s . Recent telenovelas include Amor Secreto and Karsu, La Fuerza de Una Madre . Entertainment programming includes the long-running variety show Súper Sábado Sensacional, which first aired on January 29, 1972, and remains on air today, making it one of the longest-running programs on Venezuelan television . Other regular programs include the variety magazine Portadas al Día, the game show Mega Match (where teams compete in physical and skill-based challenges), the comedy shows ¡Qué Locura! and A que te ríes, the spiritual magazine Los Astros: terapias y rituales hosted by Meredith Montero, and the competition show La guerra de los sexos .
Venevisión has a long tradition of broadcasting the annual Miss Venezuela beauty pageant, having acquired the rights to produce and transmit the event since the early 1980s when the Organización Cisneros became the majority shareholder of the contest . The network also has historically broadcast major sports events, including the 1974 FIFA World Cup and Major League Baseball games .
The network broadcasts in 1080i HDTV format, downscaled to 16:9 480i for standard definition feeds . Venevisión's international signal, originally launched as Venevisión Continental in 2000, is now known as Ve Plus (or Venevisión Plus), which is distributed on cable and satellite systems across the Americas, Europe, and Asia as a FAST (Free Ad-Supported Streaming TV) channel .
