NTV (Newfoundland Television) is a Canadian private television channel operating in the general entertainment and local news format. The primary language of broadcasting is English. The channel was founded on August 18, 1975, by Geoff Stirling, a legendary Canadian broadcaster and media entrepreneur. NTV is based in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, with its studios located at 81 Kenmount Road. The channel is owned by Stirling Communications International, a family-owned company that remains under the control of the Stirling family following Geoff Stirling's death in 2015. NTV is the only private television station serving the province of Newfoundland and Labrador and has been a cultural institution in the region for nearly 50 years.
On air, NTV features a mix of local news bulletins, current affairs programs, talk shows, entertainment content, sports coverage, and religious programming. The flagship program is NTV News, the channel's primary local newscast, which airs weeknights at 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM, covering news from St. John's, the Avalon Peninsula, and all regions of Newfoundland and Labrador. The channel also produces NTV News Morning, a live newscast airing weekdays from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, providing viewers with news, weather, traffic, and community events. Weekend newscasts include NTV News Weekend, airing Saturday and Sunday evenings. Issues & Answers is a Sunday morning public affairs program featuring interviews with politicians, community leaders, and journalists discussing current events.
One of the most iconic programs on NTV is This Hour Has 22 Minutes, a satirical news comedy series that originated on NTV before becoming a national CBC show. The channel also produces NTV Evening Magazine, a lifestyle and entertainment program covering local events, arts, and culture. NTV Sportsline is a weekly sports talk show focusing on local sports, including hockey (Newfoundland Growlers, St. John's IceCaps), soccer, and other amateur and professional sports in the province. NTV Live is a call-in talk show where viewers discuss current events and community issues with hosts and guests.
Religious programming has been a staple of NTV's schedule since its founding, reflecting Geoff Stirling's personal spiritual interests. The channel broadcasts Sound of the Spirit, a program featuring spiritual teachings, meditation, and music, as well as Stirling's Sacred Space, which explores various religious and philosophical traditions. The channel also airs Mass for Shut-Ins, a Catholic mass broadcast for viewers who cannot attend church, and Gospel Hour, featuring Christian music and preaching.
NTV is notable for its technological innovations. Geoff Stirling was a pioneer in broadcasting, and NTV was one of the first stations in Canada to broadcast in high definition, to introduce closed captioning, and to experiment with satellite transmission. The channel also operates a second service, NTV2, which broadcasts on channel 2 in St. John's and on various cable systems across the province, offering additional programming including movies, series, and alternative news coverage. In addition to its television services, NTV operates OZFM (99.9 FM), a radio station playing music from the 1990s and 2000s, and NTV+, a streaming service offering on-demand access to local news, weather, and special programs.
NTV is available throughout Newfoundland and Labrador via cable, satellite, and IPTV platforms. The channel is carried on all major television providers, including Bell TV, Rogers Cable, Shaw Direct, and Telus Optik TV. The channel broadcasts in high definition with 1080i resolution. Viewers can watch online the live broadcast of NTV through the official NTV website at ntv.ca, which offers a 24-hour live stream. Online television of NTV is also accessible via the NTV+ streaming service and mobile applications, which provide live streaming and on-demand access to news segments, full episodes of local programs, and clips from the channel's extensive archive of historic Newfoundland footage.
NTV strives to be the voice of Newfoundland and Labrador, providing news, information, and entertainment that reflects the unique culture, history, and identity of the province.
