Nelonen online television
Nelonen is a Finnish free-to-air television channel operating in the general entertainment format. The primary language of broadcasting is Finnish. The channel traces its origins to Helsinki's local cable channel PTV (Paikallistelevisio), which was founded in 1989 on the HTV cable network. It was later renamed PTV4 before adopting its current name, Nelonen (Finnish for 'the number four'), on June 1, 1997, when it expanded to national coverage. The channel is owned by Nelonen Media, a subsidiary of Sanoma Media Finland, which is part of the Sanoma Corporation. Nelonen is headquartered at the Sanomatalo building in Helsinki, Finland.
Nelonen is one of Finland's four major national channels, alongside the public broadcasters Yle TV1 and Yle TV2 and the commercial channel MTV3. The channel targets the 25-44 age demographic. Its programming includes a mix of Finnish productions, international series, movies, documentaries, sports, and entertainment shows. The channel broadcasts in high definition (1080i HDTV) and is available nationwide via digital terrestrial television (DVB-T) on channel 4 (HD) and channel 24, as well as through cable and IPTV providers.
On air, the channel's programming includes a range of Finnish series and international formats. Key Finnish programs documented on the schedule include Suomen huutokauppakeisari (Finland's Auction Emperor), a reality series following auctioneers Miska Haakana and Alisa Aarniomäki; Huvila & Huussi, a popular home renovation and lifestyle series; and Kumman kaa, a classic Finnish comedy series originally aired on Nelonen in the early 2000s. The channel also airs Vain elämää, a music reality series, and MasterChef Australia, the Australian version of the international cooking competition. Finnish versions of the reality competitions Suomen Robinson (Survivor) and Talo (The House) have also been produced for the channel.
In addition to Finnish originals, the channel broadcasts major international films. According to Finnpanel data, the most-watched programs on Nelonen in July 2025 were a series of James Bond films, which also attracted over 650,000 viewers per episode, followed by episodes of Suomen huutokauppakeisari, which reached 284,000 viewers. The channel's schedule also includes the documentary series Maailmaa mullistaneet keksinnöt (Inventions That Changed the World) and the American animated comedy Family Guy, though the latter is not currently listed as a regular program on official schedules.
Nelonen is a commercial channel supported by advertising revenue. In 2025, the channel held approximately 5 percent of the viewing share among 10-24 year olds, with a total viewing share for the Nelonen Media group (including Nelonen, Jim, Liv, and Hero) reaching 8 percent in the 10-24 demographic. As of June 30, 2025, Finland completed its transition to HD broadcasting, and Nelonen now broadcasts exclusively in high definition on terrestrial and cable networks.
Nelonen also operates the streaming service Ruutu, which offers live streaming and catch-up content for the channel's programs. The channel is headquartered in the Sanomatalo building in Helsinki, with the program management team including television director Ville Toivonen, program planning director Ville Nylund, and domestic programs manager Mirko Baas.
Nelonen strives to be a leading commercial television channel in Finland, offering viewers a broad mix of popular Finnish productions, blockbuster films, and international series. The mission of the channel is to provide high-quality entertainment that appeals to a wide audience, with a focus on the 25-44 age demographic. Thanks to its wide distribution across terrestrial, cable, and streaming platforms, Nelonen provides the opportunity to watch its programming across Finland on any device, ensuring that its entertainment content reaches Finnish audiences throughout the country and the global diaspora wherever they are.
