DVB TV online television
DVB TV is the television service of the Democratic Voice of Burma, a non-profit media organisation founded by Burmese expatriates with studios in Oslo and an office in Chiang Mai. Its radio arm began beaming uncensored news into the country over shortwave from Norway in the early 1990s, and satellite television followed in the mid-2000s as what the founders called the first free and independent Burmese-language television channel, funded in part by international free-expression organisations.
The newsroom keeps a small staff in Norway and a wide network of contributors, some working inside the country and along its borders, often at personal risk; after the most recent military takeover the organisation was banned and forced back underground, yet it continues to publish. Its reporting has reached the world through celebrated documentaries: the Oscar-nominated Burma VJ, built from the footage of its undercover video journalists, and a PBS film on the cyclone that devastated the delta, shot largely by its cameramen. Its stated mission is accurate and unbiased news, understanding among the country's ethnic and religious communities, independent public opinion, and the ideals of democracy and human rights.
Alongside independent Burmese-language news, the service publishes in English as well, with sections on labour and migrant workers, farming, the environment, media, art and sport, plus a podcast and a data desk.
