Das Erste is the flagship national television channel of the ARD association of public broadcasting corporations in Germany. The primary language of broadcasting is German. The channel was officially launched on December 25, 1952. It adopted its current brand name, Das Erste, on January 1, 1997. The channel is headquartered in Munich, Germany, and is jointly operated by the nine regional public broadcasting corporations that are members of the ARD.

On air, Das Erste offers a broad range of programming that includes news, current affairs, films, series, entertainment, sports, and children's content. The flagship news program is the Tagesschau, a nightly news broadcast. Other key programs include Tagesthemen, Panorama, and the political talk shows Anne Will and Hart aber fair. The channel is also known for its popular long-running crime drama series Tatort, the daily soap operas Sturm der Liebe and Rote Rosen, and the hospital drama In aller Freundschaft. The Sportschau brand, on air since 1961, covers major sporting events.

Das Erste offers educational and children's programming, including the iconic children's series Die Sendung mit der Maus and the Wissen vor acht series, which covers topics on nature and the future. The channel is available throughout Germany via digital terrestrial television, cable networks, and satellite. Viewers can watch online the live broadcast through the official ARD Mediathek website and mobile app. The channel is funded primarily through the German broadcast license fee.
