The channel was created on July 15, 1983, and began its official transmissions on July 26, 1986, the Day of National Rebellion in Cuba . The channel is owned and operated by the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television (ICRT) and is headquartered in Havana, Cuba . CVI was personally conceived by Fidel Castro as a way to keep the Cuban diaspora informed and to project the country's image internationally at a time when the island faced significant media isolation . Its slogan is "El canal de Cuba para el mundo" (The channel of Cuba for the world).

On air, Cubavisión Internacional broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a generalist schedule where approximately 70 percent of the programming is informative .
