Cubavisión Internacional (CVI) is a Cuban free-to-air satellite television channel operating in the generalist format. The primary language of broadcasting is Spanish. The channel was created on July 15, 1983, and began its official transmissions on July 26, 1986, the Day of National Rebellion in Cuba . The channel is owned and operated by the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television (ICRT) and is headquartered in Havana, Cuba . CVI was personally conceived by Fidel Castro as a way to keep the Cuban diaspora informed and to project the country's image internationally at a time when the island faced significant media isolation . Its slogan is "El canal de Cuba para el mundo" (The channel of Cuba for the world).

On air, Cubavisión Internacional broadcasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, with a generalist schedule where approximately 70 percent of the programming is informative . The channel is available on five continents and reaches more than 80 million households in 57 countries . The flagship news program is Cubanoticias, which airs live four times a day (at 2:00 PM, 6:00 PM, 10:00 PM, and 2:00 AM Cuba time) . Other regular news and analysis programs include Pensar en Red (a discussion program where specialists analyze current affairs), Enlace Cuba, Entrevista, Noticias.cu, Resumen Semanal, and Archivo.Cu .

Sports programming is a key part of the schedule, with one of the most-viewed segments being the baseball debate program Bola Viva, as well as Zona Deportiva and Adrenalina 360 . Cultural offerings include the widely-followed Sunday magazine 75 Grados Oeste (which won a following for its focus on cultural personalities), Opus Arte, Ecos de Mujer, Contraplano, and Como me lo Contaron . Music shows include Fuera de Rosca (focused on Cuban popular music), La Descarga, and Llegó la Música Cubana, while La naturaleza secreta covers environmental topics . The popular series Tras la Huella (starring actor Enrique Molina as Inspector Conde) also airs on the network . Other productions include Teleplay (featuring Cuban fiction), Cámara en mano, América en la casa, Caminar Cuba (a travel show), and the documentary space Documental .

CVI is produced in 1080p high definition (HDTV) and is distributed via a network of five satellites (including Intelsat, Astra IL, Hispasat, and Asiasat 2), covering the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania . In Cuba, the channel shares bandwidth on digital terrestrial television with Canal Caribe, broadcasting in standard definition during daytime hours . The channel is directed by Bárbara Doval, who has overseen the channel's recent digital expansion .

Cubavisión Internacional strives to break the information siege against Cuba by offering an authentic, diverse, and objective perspective of daily life on the island to international audiences . The mission of the channel is to keep the Cuban diaspora connected to their roots, to promote Cuban culture, and to serve as a bridge between Cuba and the world, strengthening ties of friendship and solidarity between nations .

I tuned in for the morning magazine and stayed for the short interview with a Havana musician. The mix of headlines and relaxed conversation made a good start to the day.

I watched a documentary about Havana's old neighborhoods during a slow evening, and the relaxed pacing made it easy to follow from abroad. The stream was steadier than my cable app, though the schedule information could be clearer.

I watched a documentary about Cuban architecture during a quiet Sunday afternoon, and the slower pace suited it perfectly. From abroad, I appreciate having a window into daily life that feels less polished than cable news, though some older programs look a little soft.

The business reports are brief but worthwhile, especially when they explain how new policies affect ordinary households. I only wish the debate segments allowed more time for opposing views instead of rushing to the next headline.

The local news segment is at its best when it slows down and lets people explain what is happening. The political debates, though, could use a little less shouting and a few more concrete answers.
