BRT 1 online television

BRT 1 is the main television channel of Bayrak Radio and Television Corporation, the state funded public broadcaster of Northern Cyprus, whose name translates from Turkish as flag or banner. The corporation began on 25 December 1963 as a radio station built in a garage by two volunteers, with electricity taken from a few car batteries, and its first words on air were the name of the station repeated three times. Television followed on 19 July 1976, making it the oldest television service of the Turkish Cypriot community. The headquarters are in North Nicosia and broadcasting is in Turkish.

Until 1996 the corporation held a monopoly, broken by the first private radio station and the first private television channel. Today it runs three of the roughly fifteen television channels in the territory and five of its twenty four radio stations, and the public records list sister services for sport, radio, an international feed and a classic music outlet. High definition broadcasting started on 25 December 2014 after new studios opened a month earlier, carried on the Cyprus packet of a Turkish satellite at 12344 V, 30000, 2/3, and the channel moved to 16:9 on 14 February 2015 with picture formats of 576i and 1080i.
