CSPAN přináší nepřerušované a neupravované pokrytí Kongresu Spojených států, včetně zasedání Sněmovny reprezentantů a Senátu. Jeho program se zaměřuje na veřejné dění, s přímými přenosy výborových slyšení, tiskových konferencí a dalších vládních jednání. Stanice také vysílá pořady s možností telefonických dotazů, kde mohou diváci diskutovat o politických otázkách přímo se zákonodárci, novináři a odborníky na politiku. Součástí pravidelného programu jsou diskuse o knihách, historické projevy a archivní záběry významných politických událostí. Vysílání je bez reklamních přestávek a redakční postoj zůstává neutrální, zaměřený na prezentaci událostí tak, jak se odehrávají, bez komentářů či analýz.

Kromě hlavního kabelového kanálu provozuje CSPAN samostatné stanice pro jednání Sněmovny a Senátu, stejně jako vyhrazenou službu pro živé přenosy veřejných ak
