Okto TV online television

OKTO is an Austrian non-commercial community television channel operating in the public access format. The primary language of broadcasting is German, with programming also available in 19 other languages including Bosnian, Croatian, Serbian, English, Spanish, French, Turkish, Bulgarian, Chinese, and Farsi. The channel was founded on November 28, 2005, and is based in Vienna, Austria. OKTO is operated by the non-profit Community TV-GmbH under the management of Christian Jungwirth, with the backing of the "Verein zur Gründung und zum Betrieb Offener Fernsehkanäle in Wien" (Association for the Foundation and Operation of Open Television Channels in Vienna). The channel is primarily financed through the "Non-Commercial Broadcasting Fund" of the Austrian Regulatory Authority for Broadcasting and Telecommunications (RTR-GmbH).

On air, OKTO offers a diverse and often unusual program produced by citizens, communities, and non-profit organizations. Over 500 enthusiastic individuals produce more than 100 series that are regularly broadcast on OKTO. The programming includes socio-critical and socio-political magazine programs, youth and entertainment formats, science and education shows, multilingual programs, art and culture segments, music shows, LGBTQI+ content, talk shows, portrait series (such as "Butterbrot" and "Mein Weg"), and international news such as "Democracy Now!" with Amy Goodman. Notable productions include the award-winning inclusive series "Perspektivenwechsel" (Change of Perspective), produced by a mixed-abled team, and the long-running "Afrika TV" magazine. The channel operates on the principle of free access to broadcasting, meaning anyone can propose a serial program concept and, after completing a basic workshop, produce their own show

The channel also engages in media education through its Digitaljournalismus Akademie (Digital Journalism Academy), which trains young people in journalism skills and offers paid internships. In cooperation with the Fachhochschule St. Pölten and the FHWien der WKW, the channel also produces TV formats with university students.

OKTO is available in Austria via A1 Telekom Austria (formerly known as A1 TV) and Magenta TV, and in Lower Austria and Burgenland via kabelplus. The channel is also available in the greater Vienna area and parts of Lower Austria and Burgenland via DVB-T2 on the simpliTV platform. Viewers can watch online the live broadcast of OKTO through the official JOYN streaming platform, as well as via the official OKTO website at okto.tv. The OKTOthek (Oktothek) provides an on-demand archive of past programs, allowing viewers to catch up on missed content at any time.

OKTO strives to be a media platform for a pluralistic society, offering a complementary program to public and commercial television that gives a voice to communities and topics that are underrepresented in mainstream media. The mission of the channel is to provide a participatory medium where anyone with a creative mind and an interest in media can turn their ideas into independent television shows, free from commercial advertising. Thanks to its digital platforms, OKTO provides the opportunity to watch online its diverse community-driven programming on any device, ensuring that its unique content reaches audiences across Austria and the world wherever they are.
