Al Jazeera Documentary online television
Al Jazeera Documentary, in Arabic الجزيرة الوثائقية, is the documentary channel of the Al Jazeera network in Qatar and a cultural service devoted entirely to documentary film. It was launched on 1 January 2007 and is described as the first channel of its kind in the Arabic-speaking world, with its own website added two years later on 1 January 2009. Its stated starting point is simple: the human being, the environment he lives in, and the interaction between the two. The network behind it holds one of the largest documentary film libraries in the world, and that archive is what the channel was created to open.
The schedule is built on a rule that viewers notice immediately: every programme has exactly one hour, and the timings are kept precisely, so a slot started at a given hour ends at the next. The channel attributes its uptake to that discipline, to Arabic and to the variety of what is shown. Subject matter runs across science, history, politics, literature and art, around the clock. The screen is described as resting on four sides, informational, awareness-raising, cultural and artistic, with enjoyment as the depth beneath them: new information about the fields a film examines, a contribution to the cultural awareness and identity of the viewer, an opening onto other worlds and ideas and beliefs, and an artistic standard that respects both the taste of the audience and the craft of the documentary form.
Watching needs no subscription: Watch Live in a browser on a computer, tablet or telephone, or on a connected television, through the dedicated live page of the network. The channel keeps a deep archive of its own, with more than 7,100 films and reports published since October 2008 and total views past 587 million.
