The channel was founded on February 28, 2008, by businessman El Sayed El Badawi, who also served as president of the liberal Wafd Party from May 2010 to March 2018. The channel is owned by the Egyptian Media Group, a subsidiary of Eagle Capital Investment, which is owned by the General Intelligence Service. The CEO is Tamer Morsi, a prominent Egyptian TV drama producer. According to Ipsos data from May 2017, Al Hayah was the second most popular public channel in Egypt after MBC Masr. The channel offers free content that combines political coverage and entertainment, broadcasting 24 hours a day in Arabic.

On air, Al Hayah TV features a mix of news bulletins, talk shows, entertainment programs, drama series, and religious segments. Regular programs include حديث المفتي (The Mufti's Talk), a daily religious program; أجمل ناس (The Most Beautiful People); الدنيا بخير (The World is Fine); العباقرة عائلات (Geniuses Families); الشيف شربيني (Chef Sharbini), a cooking show; and بركة رمضان (Ramadan Blessings), broadcast during the holy month.
