Khozestan online television
Khozestan, in Persian شبکه خوزستان, is the provincial television channel of Khuzestan in south-western Iran, part of the national broadcaster IRIB and based in Ahvaz on the banks of the Karun river. The provincial broadcasting centre began its work in 1988, and after a decade of preparation the television network itself went on air in 1998. It calls itself the Network of Empathy, and the name fits a province of many peoples: the channel broadcasts in Persian, Arabic and Luri, speaking to the Arabs, Bakhtiaris and Lurs of the region in their own tongues alongside the national language.
The grid reflects the life of a province that holds much of the country's oil, its greatest river and its oldest plain: national and provincial news, programmes about the customs of the communities of Khuzestan, and coverage of the cities of the plain, from Abadan and Dezful to Shushtar and Masjed Soleyman. A sister service serves Abadan itself, and the main channel reaches its viewers through a network of transmitters across the province in high definition, while satellite carries it to the Persian- and Arabic-speaking audience far beyond the borders of Iran.
For the people of Khuzestan the channel is the daily mirror of the province, and for those who left, a line back to the Karun.
