Khavaran online television
Khavaran, in Persian شبکه خاوران, is the provincial television channel of South Khorasan in eastern Iran, part of the national broadcaster IRIB and based in Birjand. It was inaugurated on 17 August 2010 and broadcasts around the clock in Persian, presenting itself with the proud slogan Khavaran, jewel of eastern Iran. The broadcasting tradition of the region runs much deeper than the channel: radio transmitters worked in Birjand from the 1970s, a television transmitter unit followed in the 1990s, and the provincial broadcasting centre was established after the old Khorasan province was divided into three.
The grid is provincial in the true sense: national and local news, programmes about the life of the region and coverage of its saffron-growing towns, desert landscapes and mountain villages. The channel goes out in high definition and reaches beyond the province by satellite to the wider Persian-speaking audience, while viewers at home receive it through the terrestrial network. The schedule runs day and night, mixing national strands with the output of the Birjand studios and reporters across the province's districts.
For the people of South Khorasan the channel is the daily mirror of the province, and for those who have moved away it is a line back home.
