Afghanistan International online television

Afghanistan International is a British news and current affairs television channel operating in the 24-hour information format. The primary languages of broadcasting are Dari Persian and Pashto. The channel is headquartered in Chiswick, London, United Kingdom, and is owned by Volant Media UK Ltd, the same parent company that operates Iran International. Afghanistan International was launched on August 15, 2021, the same day that the Taliban captured Kabul and regained control of Afghanistan, which led to the channel launching earlier than its originally planned start date of the International Day of Peace on September 21.

On air, Afghanistan International features continuous news coverage, breaking news reports, political talk shows, documentary programming, and in-depth debates on current affairs. The flagship program is Maydan, which brings top policymakers, analysts, and thinkers from around the world to London to discuss Afghanistan's current affairs. The channel produces documentaries covering political, social, and cultural topics related to Afghanistan and the broader region. The channel's programming aims to provide reliable, unbiased news and information to Afghan audiences, filling a critical media vacuum that developed as many journalists fled the country following the Taliban's return to power. The channel relies heavily on reporting from across Afghanistan and engages with audiences both inside and outside the country through talk shows, debates, and informative programs.

The channel originally launched with daily nine hours of live television news and programs, with plans to expand to a full 24/7 schedule. It also operates a radio stream that offers 24-hour news and programming. In August 2023, the channel started Pashto language broadcasts, having initially only offered programs in Persian. Afghanistan International has journalists based in both London and Washington D.C., and it works with many Afghan educators, artists, and intellectuals who have fled Afghanistan and now cooperate with the network to spread information about what is happening in the country and to educate people about the values of democracy and freedom.

Afghanistan International is available worldwide via satellite on multiple platforms, including the TürkmenÄlem/MonacoSat satellite at 52°E and Al Yah 1 at 52.5°E, receivable in Europe and Asia including Afghanistan. The channel broadcasts in high definition with 1080i picture format, as well as in standard definition. The channel also offers a radio relay transmission via shortwave on 7600 kHz worldwide and medium wave on 999 kHz for Afghanistan. Viewers can watch online the live broadcast of Afghanistan International through the official website at afintl.com, as well as via online streaming platforms and social media. The channel is free-to-air and accessible without subscription.

Since its launch, Afghanistan International has faced significant opposition from the Taliban authorities. In May 2024, the Taliban warned journalists and experts against collaborating with the channel, and a spokesman for the Taliban-controlled Ministry of Information and Culture accused the station of committing professional violations. In September 2024, the channel denounced the Taliban's jamming of its satellite signal, describing it as a direct assault on press freedom and a violation of International Telecommunication Union regulations. The channel's executive editor stated that the jamming was a desperate attempt to silence the voice of the Afghan people and a continuation of the Taliban's systematic campaign to suppress independent media. Despite these challenges, the channel continues to broadcast and has become one of the most popular news channels for Afghanistan due to its extensive coverage and freedom in reporting.

Afghanistan International strives to serve as a voice for the voiceless, telling the story of the people of Afghanistan and providing a critical source of reporting and information amid rapidly shifting events on the ground. The mission of the channel is to provide independent, impartial, and reliable information to Afghan audiences, to protect media freedom in the country, and to uphold standard journalistic norms of reporting facts. The channel aspires to be a 24/7 international news network that engages with people both inside and outside Afghanistan. Thanks to modern digital platforms and satellite technology, Afghanistan International provides the opportunity to watch online the live broadcast on any device - from smartphones to Smart TVs - ensuring that Afghan audiences across the country and around the world, as well as the global diaspora, can access its news coverage and programming wherever they are.
