Duna TV online television
Duna TV is a Hungarian public television channel and, since 15 March 2015, the national main channel of the public media. The word in its name is the Hungarian for the Danube. Its history began with a different purpose: the station went on the air in December 1992 as the first Hungarian television service to broadcast by satellite, and its task was to produce programmes and news for the Hungarian communities beyond the borders, in the Carpathian Basin and in the diaspora, in their own language.
The public company behind it was constituted on 7 October 1992, and transmissions opened on 24 December 1992 by satellite. A government injection worth 28 million dollars followed in 1993 with a change of management, and a few years later it became the first station in Hungary to broadcast 24 hours a day. In 2004 it reached the Americas and Australia, in 2006 a second signal named Autonomy, today Duna World, and from 1 December 2008 it transmitted in high definition. The licence fee that funded it was abolished in July 2002, replaced by state payments and advertising.
A state fund set up on 1 January 2011 brought the four public media companies together, and on 1 July 2015 they merged into a single nonprofit media service company, a member of the European Broadcasting Union, in which this channel took the generalist schedule and the older first channel became a continuous news service. That fund was dissolved on 26 July 2026 and replaced by a new national radio and television company. The channel page lives on the portal of the public media, with a player, a schedule and an age notice.
