Dragon TV International online television
Dragon TV International is the overseas feed of Dragon TV, the general entertainment satellite channel of Shanghai operated by Shanghai Media Group. In Chinese the station is called Dongfang Weishi, literally the eastern satellite channel, and audiences at home know it as the Tomato Channel because of the shape of its logo. The international version carries the same mix of drama, variety and news to viewers outside the country.
The station began broadcasting in October 1998 under the name Shanghai Television and took the Dragon Television name on 23 October 2003. From 28 September 2009 it moved to high-definition output, the same date recorded for the start of the international feed, and its signal now reaches most of mainland China as well as audiences abroad. News is produced by the Shanghai Media Group television news centre, a newsroom of some 500 people a day working in seven sections and turning out about five hours of bulletins, described as the largest open-press studio in Asia. The daily line-up runs from the morning programme through a thirty-minute midday bulletin to the primetime news and the late evening show.
Away from news the schedule leans on variety formats: an outdoor challenge show now in its eighth season, a home renovation series, a weekly current affairs programme, food and travel formats, and documentary strands following police work, archaeology and paediatric medicine. Drama series fill the evening slots, and the video archive of the station counts close to two million followers and more than 8,500 uploads.
